The Guardian reports on Sachintha Warnakulasuriya, a pregnant care worker in Scotland, who fears being separated from her unborn baby after the Home Office sent “go home” letters to her husband and six-year-old daughter. The family are legally entitled to live in the UK, and Sachintha is continuing to work as a sponsored care worker. She was particularly distressed because her pregnancy is considered high risk, following the loss of a previous baby, and she was due to have a planned caesarean shortly after receiving the Home Office letter. She said she did not know what would happen to her new baby if her husband and daughter were required to leave. The case is part of a wider Home Office crackdown affecting dependants of care workers. The families concerned say they came to the UK legally before the restrictions on bringing dependants were introduced in March 2024 .

Naga Kandiah of MTC Solicitors, who represents the families, said:

“After more than two years of approving similar applications under the same rules, the Home Office appears to have abruptly changed course, refusing families without explanation.”
