Mark Nelson, a Jamaican man who has lived in the UK since 2000 and has five British children and a British partner, was facing deportation after serving a prison sentence for offences committed in 2017. After lawyers from MTC Solicitors, including Naga Kandiah, intervened, the Home Office cancelled his deportation and Nelson was released on bail so he could return to his family.

Naga Kandiah said:

“He committed his offences in 2017 and served his sentence. Yet nearly a decade later he continues to endure the threat of deportation.”  Kandiah argued that a completed prison sentence should not effectively become a lifelong punishment through the continuing threat of deportation, and warned that people without timely legal representation can be removed before their cases are properly considered.
