Naga Kandiah Helps Windrush-Era Grandmother Regain Permanent Settlement in the UK

The Guardian reports that Comfort Olufunmilayo Olawo, an 82-year-old Windrush-era grandmother, has finally regained permanent settlement in the UK after spending 50 years travelling between Britain and Nigeria.
Olawo first came to the UK in 1966 and was granted indefinite leave to remain. However, after spending more than two years in Nigeria following the birth of her third child, she lost that status under the immigration rules. For decades afterwards, she had to travel between the UK and Nigeria on six-month visitor visas, despite having five children and 10 grandchildren living in Britain.
Naga Kandiah’s quote
“Our client, now 82, has finally been granted permanent settlement in the UK and reunited with her British-born children.”
Kandiah said the case demonstrated the long-term harm caused by historical immigration injustice and inflexible rules, and highlighted the need for a more humane immigration system.
